Bethesda is a census-designated place that resides in southern Montgomery County, Maryland, just northwest of the United States capital of Washington, D.C. The name comes from a local church that was built in 1820, the Bethesda Meeting House. Bethesda itself is considered one of the most affluent and well-educated communities in all of the United States, and placed first on Time’s list of top earning towns. Historically, the area that would become Bethesda was situated on a major throughfare of an ancient Native American trail. A man by the name of Henry Fleet, an English fur trader, was the first European to travel the area by sailing up the Potomac River. After two years with the Piscataway tribe, he returned to England and won funding for another North American expedition. Throughout decades of railroad development, agriculture and the overall tidings of America and its capital, Bethesda would grow into the area that is known, and praised, to this day.
The Bethesda area, as well as its surrounding communities, cities and neighborhoods, all fall under a humid subtropical climate categorization. The summer seasons tend to be on the longer side, and especially hot and humid, with average daytime highs being from eighty-three to ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit. Winters, by comparison, tend to be mild to cool. The wind factor off of the water in certain areas in Bethesda also attributes to occasional chilling winds in the winter, and residents and visitors alike can also expect occasional thunderstorms, especially in the more humid summer months.
