Bethesda is a census-designated place that resides in southern Montgomery County, Maryland, just northwest of the United States capital of Washington, D.C. The name comes from a local church that was built in 1820, the Bethesda Meeting House. Bethesda itself is considered one of the most affluent and well-educated communities in all of the United States, and placed first on Time’s list of top earning towns. Historically, the area that would become Bethesda was situated on a major throughfare of an ancient Native American trail. A man by the name of Henry Fleet, an English fur trader, was the first European to travel the area by sailing up the Potomac River.
